Merrill Warkentin's Research Publications
Dr. Merrill Warkentin is Professor of Management Information Systems in the Management & Information Systems
Department in the College of Business and Industry at Mississippi State University. He has published over 100 articles and books,
focusing his research in the areas of electronic commerce, virtual teams, system security, and knowledge acquisition.
He is also on the research staff of the Center for Computer Security Research.
For further information, consult his MSU page.
Previously, Professor Warkentin was the Joseph G. Riesman Research Professor in the College of Business Administration
at Northeastern University in Boston, where he was also the MIS Coordinator for the College of Business
and the Founder and Director of the graduate and undergraduate eCommerce programs for University College at NEU.
He has also taught at George Mason University, Bryant University, the Army Logistics Management College, and Doane College.
One focus of his research includes managerial and technological strategies for success in eBusiness.
He has evaluated information infrastructures for knowledge creation and customer intimacy
utilizing data mining and intelligent agent technologies. He has also explored mCommerce (mobile commerce)
issues and standards, process integration through eServices, and customer profiling in eCommerce. His work has
appeared in several eCommerce and IT journals and books, and he is the co-author or editor of two eCommerce
books in 2002.
Another area of his research is computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS) and virtual teams.
He is primarily interested in information exchange between virtual team members and
the relationships between virtual team design, team member perceptions of process and success, and actual performance metrics.
He is currently conducting research designed to understand the enhancement virtual teams relationships over time,
and to explore the role of Instant Messaging (IM) technologies in facilitating internal collaboration and external communication activities.
Dr. Warkentin also conducts research in the area of computer security, exploring managerial perceptions of IT security threats,
the use of intelligent agents for system security, alternative user authentication processes, and IT security governance structures.
Dr. Warkentin has also developed methodologies for conducting knowledge engineering, the process of building knowledge-based expert systems.
His primary interest in this area is innovative techniques for conducting knowledge acquisition and requirements analysis.
