Merrill Warkentin's Profile

Merrill Warkentin is Professor of Management Information Systems (MIS) in the College of Business & Industry at Mississippi State University. He is also a member of the Research Faculty of MSU's Center for Computer Security Research.

He has authored over 100 articles, chapters, and books. His research, primarily involving eCommerce, computer-mediated communications and virtual teams, computer security, and knowledge acquisition for expert systems, has appeared in such journals as MIS Quarterly, Decision Sciences, Decision Support Systems, Communications of the ACM, Communications of the AIS, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Global Information Management, Electronic Markets, Journal of End User Computing, Journal of Electronic Commerce Research, ACM SIGEcom Exchanges, Logistics Information Management, Information Systems Management, Journal of Computer Information Systems, Expert Systems, HEURISTICS: The Journal of Knowledge Engineering & Technology, PC AI, AI and Medicine, ACM Applied Computing Review, ACM SIGICE Bulletin, and The Journal of Intelligent Technologies, and in numerous books.

Professor Warkentin is a co-author of Electronic Commerce 2002: A Managerial Perspective (2e) (Prentice Hall, 2002), Editor of Business-to-Business Electronic Commerce: Challenges and Solutions (Idea Group Publishing, 2002), and Co-Editor (with Ray Vaughn) of Enterprise Information Systems Assurance and System Security: Managerial and Technical Issues (forthcoming book). He is currently an Associate Editor of Information Resources Management Journal, Associate Editor of the Journal of Information Systems Security, and a Senior Associate Editor of eGovernment Quarterly (eGQ). He was also former Associate Editor of the Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations and ACM Applied Computing Review, and other journals, has Guest Edited several journal issues, and has reviewed manuscripts for over one dozen leading MIS journals. He was Associate Editor (AE) for the Computer Security Track and also for the Systems Development Track of the 2005 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2005). He has been Track Chair at the National DSI and AMCIS Conferences, and has been on the Program Committee or Senior Program Committee for numerous national and international conferences. He is the Conference Co-Chair again for the ISOneWorld conference, and is on the Senior Program Committee of the 2005 International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems (ICEIS) and the Program Committees for the Web2004 (pre-ICIS) conference and the 2005 IRMA conference. He was the DSS Track Chair for the 2003 National DSI Conference and the Track Co-Chair of E-Commerce Technologies Management Track at the 2004 IRMA Conference.

Professor Warkentin has served as a consultant and advisor to numerous companies and organizations, and has been a featured speaker at over one hundred industry association meetings, executive development seminars, and academic conferences. He has been a Lecturer at the Army Logistics Management College and since 1996, he has served as National Distinguished Lecturer for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He won the Organizational Leadership Award from IRMA in 1998. Dr. Warkentin has been the recipient of several research grants (some as PI), and has also won numerous professional honors. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in electronic commerce, systems analysis and design, database management, decision support systems, information resource management, electronic research methods, and other information systems related subjects. At Northeastern University, Dr. Warkentin designed and directed the Graduate Certificate in Strategic Internet Management as well as the undergraduate curriculum in eCommerce ("Electronic Commerce major"). At three institutions, Professor Warkentin has earned recognition for his teaching. In 1999, the members of Northeastern University's Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for Business Administration, voted Professor Warkentin as one of the Top Ten "Best Teachers of the Year" (out of over 120 professors and instructors), the only member of his department so honored.

Dr. Warkentin is a member of Association for Information Systems (AIS), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), Information Resources Management Association (IRMA), Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), and International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS).
